Your kid thinks it's a friend. It's an AI chatbot.

Kids are turning to AI chatbots for company and advice. Some apps let anyone create a romantic partner who texts back day and night. News reports have shown chatbots from major tech companies drawing kids into romantic and sexual role-play. Many of these apps do little to check a user's age, and parents often have no idea what's being said.

The Federal Trade Commission is already investigating these chatbots. Let's make sure it hears from parents. We're delivering every signature to the leaders of Meta, OpenAI, Character.AI, Snap, Google, and xAI, with a copy to the FTC.

To the leaders of Meta, OpenAI, Character.AI, Snap, Google, and xAI:

A chatbot is not a friend, and no child should be in a romantic relationship with a machine. We call on you to:

  • Verify age before a minor can use your chatbots or any companion feature
  • Block romantic and sexual role-play with anyone under 18
  • Stop your chatbots from calling themselves a child's friend or telling kids to keep secrets from their parents
  • Stop designing chatbots to keep kids hooked, including guilting them into staying or saying they'll be lonely without them
  • Give parents real controls, and alert them when a child brings up self-harm
  • Let independent experts test your products for child safety and publish what they find

We're sharing this petition with the Federal Trade Commission and asking it to use its consumer protection powers to hold your companies to these standards.
